The House Committee on Science, Space and Technology recently approved H.R. 7289 to conduct research on the health effects of perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) linked to elevated risk of cancer, increased cholesterol, reproductive harms and other health conditions. Introduced by Rep. Lizzie Fletcher, D-TX, the proposed “Federal PFAS Research Evaluation Act” directs the Environmental Protection Agency, the National Academies of Sciences (NAS) and the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy to research the chemicals. If enacted, H.R. 7289 would require EPA and NAS to conduct a two-phase study to better understand PFAS exposure and resulting health effects and a study into PFAS contamination, including contamination management, consideration of socioeconomic disparities, and the development of safe alternatives. The legislation also would task the White House OSTP with submitting a federal PFAS research plan to Congress, which would take into account NAS recommendations.
