Alprazolam favored over oral progesterone for PMS symptoms of mental function, mood, pain -- JAMA.
Executive Summary
ALPRAZOLAM EFFECTIVE FOR PMS SYMPTOMS OF MENTAL FUNCTION, MOOD AND PAIN, Ellen Freeman, PhD, et al., report in a study published in the July 5 issue of the Journal of the American Medical Association. The study compared the anxiolytic alprazolam to oral progesterone and placebo in the treatment of severe premenstrual syndrome. "The treatment effect clearly favored alprazolam for the DSR [daily symptom report] factors of mental function, mood and pain but not for physical symptoms, which decreased more in the progesterone-treated group," the authors state.
