Executive Summary
FDA "REDBOOK II" GUIDELINES ADD COSTS WITHOUT INCREASING SAFETY ASSURANCE, CTFA argued in recent comments on the first draft of the revised Toxicological Principles for the Safety Assessment of Direct Food Additives and Color Additives used in Food, known as Redbook II. The Cosmetic, Toiletry and Fragrance Association asserted that the current Redbook II draft recommends "a significant number of new tests (particularly in the areas of neurotoxicology and immunotoxicology), many of which would add little (if any) additional assurance of safety, and (if implemented) would substantially increase the cost of safety testing."
