AAD PROPOSING SUNSCREEN TFM's SPF RATINGS BE SHIFTED UPWARDS

This article was originally published in The Rose Sheet

Executive Summary

AAD PROPOSING SUNSCREEN TFM's SPF RATINGS BE SHIFTED UPWARDS to "encourage people to use the higher levels of sun protection products," the American Academy of Dermatology said in March 18 comments on the sunscreen tentative final monograph. The TFM designates products with SPF 2 to 4 as "minimal; SPF 4 to 8, "moderate"; SPF 8 to 12, "high"; SPF 12 to 20, "very high"; and SPF 20 to 30, "ultra." AAD believes that the ratings "need to be shifted upwards, i.e., 'minimal' (SPF 4-8), 'moderate' (SPF 8-12), etc." SPF 15 products, recommended by many dermatologists for "good protection regardless of skin type," AAD said, should not be designated "high" or "very high," but rather "should be labeled as nothing more than 'good.'"
