Calcium carbonate inclusion in antiplaque TFM urged by SmithKline Beecham.

This article was originally published in The Rose Sheet

Executive Summary

CALCIUM CARBONATE INCLUSION IN OTC ANTIPLAQUE TFM URGED BY SMITHKLINE BEECHAM in a March 17 citizen petition submitted to FDA requesting that the agency reopen its call for data on ingredients to be reviewed under the OTC Dental and Oral Health Care Drug Products tentative final monograph. SB maintained that "recently compiled clinical evidence" based on medical and technical evaluations of SB's calcium carbonate-based Aquafresh toothpaste shows that calcium carbonate "disrupts the growth of plaque and helps reduce gingivitis." SB also markets Macleans toothpaste, which contains calcium carbonate.
