Executive Summary
Child-resistant packaging requirement: Consumer Product Safety Commission votes unanimously on June 15 to issue a final rule adopting changes to the child-resistant packaging testing protocol in order to make household product packaging more "senior friendly." The latest version of the proposed "senior friendly" testing protocol would include a panel of adults aged 50-70 years of age. Currently, the adult test panel includes subjects ranging in age from 18-45. In January, CPSC voted in favor of a final rule that would have required a panel of subjects aged 60-75 ("The Rose Sheet" Jan. 9, p. 9). Faced with broad-based industry opposition, the commission in February decided to withhold publication of the final rule to address industry concerns with the required age-range of the test panel and with the one-year effective date.
