Delaney clause reform: Former Grocery Manufacturers of America Senior VP Sherwin Gardner and McCormick & Co. VP-Quality Assurance Susan Abbott asked Sen. Nancy Kassebaum (R-KS) to include Delaney clause reform in her FDA reform bill (S-1477) at a hearing before the Senate Committee on Labor and Human Resources on Feb. 21. Gardner, a former FDA deputy commissioner, recommended that Kassebaum "incorporate the principle of negligible risk" in the evaluation of substances thought to be carcinogenic. A third witness at the hearing, Center for Science in the Public Interest Director of Food Safety Caroline DeWall argued that although the Delaney clause may have "outgrown" its usefulness when applied to pesticides, it still has "value" in the food additive area...
