Executive Summary
SODIUM BICARBONATE, SANGUINARIA, SDS DATA INSUFFICIENT TO DETERMINE EFFICACY of the dentifrice/mouthrinse ingredients for the reduction or prevention of plaque and gingivitis, FDA's OTC plaque subcommittee concluded at its June 6-7 meeting in Gaithersburg, Md. In separate votes for each ingredient, the subcommittee unanimously agreed to classify sodium bicarbonate (up to 5 g per dose), sanguinaria (750 mcg/g in dentifrices, 300 mcg/ml in oral rinses) and sodium dodecyl sulfate (up to 1% in mouthrinses) as Category III (data insufficient to permit classification) for effectiveness against plaque and gingivitis.
