Cosmetics tallow derivatives allowance proposed in EU specified-risk materials ban.

This article was originally published in The Rose Sheet

Executive Summary

EU BSE RISK MATERIALS BAN: TALLOW COSMETICS EXEMPTION PROPOSED by the Commission of the European Union in a document released Dec. 3. The proposal would modify the European Union's July ban on the use of all transmissible spongiform encephalopathies specified risk materials (SRM), i.e., brain, spinal cord and eyes from cattle, sheep and goats, which is set to take effect Jan. 1. Under the new proposal, EU member states would allow the use of tallow derivatives in cosmetics as long as the appropriate means of extracting the material are used. "Tallow derivatives may be used for the production of pharmaceuticals and cosmetic products if obtained by one of the methods considered safe" by scientific experts such as the Scientific Committee on Cosmetology, the proposal states.
