Henney nomination

This article was originally published in The Rose Sheet

Executive Summary

Administration said to be working with five Republican Senators to pass FDA commissioner nomination for Jane Henney, MD, through Senate before recess. Senators Pete Domenici (N.M.), Bill Frist (Tenn.), Orrin Hatch (Utah), Dan Coats (Ind.) and Susan Collins (Maine) have signed on as Henney supporters after Senate Majority Whip Don Nickles (R-Okla.) blocked her nomination from floor consideration. Nickles is concerned about Henney's views on tobacco regulation and the review of the abortifacient drug RU-486. While Nickle's move may keep the nomination from being considered before 1999, it does not prevent the president from appointing his nominee for a one-year period over the congressional recess
