Executive Summary
House bill raising the monetary penalties applied in copyright infringement cases passed the floor on Aug. 2 by voice vote. The bill, the Copyright Damages Improvement Act (HR 1761), increases the minimum and maximum awards for individual or joint statutory damage to $750 and $30,000, respectively. The penalty for willful infringement will increase to $150,000. HR 1761 was introduced by Courts & Intellectual Property Subcommittee Chairman Howard Coble (R-N.C.)
