Executive Summary
Friends of the Earth is requesting all records relating to a phthalates survey recently completed by the Center for Food Safety & Applied Nutrition's Office of Cosmetics & Colors, including the names and brands of products tested, under the Freedom of Information Act, the advocacy group states in a March 30 1letter to FDA. CFSAN's Fiscal 2004 Program Priorities Report Card, released in January, revealed the study found five phthalate esters in 32 of 48 cosmetic products analyzed. Study also detected phthalate levels in tested cosmetics ranging from 16 ppm to 59,000 ppm, with the highest levels identified in nail polish (2"The Rose Sheet" Jan. 29, 2005, p. 4). FoE requests "a copy of the full survey, full survey results (including product names and brand names of all products tested), scientific data, testing procedure and other documents related" to the study to determine human exposure to phthalates.
