SCCP input requested

This article was originally published in The Rose Sheet

Executive Summary

European Commission has requested that its Scientific Committee on Consumer Products release an opinion on the safety of triclosan when used as a preservative in cosmetic products, SCCP announces March 20. SCCP is asked to review documentation provided by the Norwegian Food Control Authority showing resistance developed by certain microorganisms in response to triclosan. SCCP recently ruled that continued use of triclosan as a preservative at 0.3% is safe in "common use" cosmetic products including toothpastes, hand soaps and shower gels (1"The Rose Sheet" Feb. 16, 2009, p. 7). Scientific opinions are also requested on melatonin, choline salts and their esters, and the labeling of 26 fragrance substances
