Executive Summary
FDA requesting comment on color and food additives premarket review and approval in the Federal Register May 5. CFSAN received new resources in FY 2000 dedicated to the process and is giving stakeholders an opportunity to comment on how the funding should be applied. As part of its review, CFSAN will "consider administrative and procedural enhancements to ensure that program goals are met while maintaining high standards of safety and scientific credibility." Written comments are due July 19. CFSAN has been working to increase the rate of petition reviews; in its FY 2000 budget proposal, the agency estimated it would complete 40% of reviews and reduce the number of overdue petition to 20% by FY 2000 (1"The Rose Sheet" March 1, 1999, p. 6).
