Executive Summary

Soap and Detergent Association recommends the interim final rule on BSE, prohibiting the use of certain cattle material in foods, cosmetics and dietary supplements, should include the minimum process conditions that must be applied for processing tallow as required under the reg. SDA submitted comments on the interim final rule Oct. 12, suggesting the conditions specified by the European Commission's Scientific Steering Committee for processing tallow be included. In addition, the association says the traditional industrial standard for determining the level of insoluble protein, American Oil Chemist Society method Ca 3a-46, should be included in the rule as a recognized test procedure.
