UK maintains kava ban

The ban on kava kava remains in the UK, the Food Standards Agency (UK) states in a recent announcement. The independent scientific advisory committee, the Committee on Toxicity (COT), reviewed the latest scientific evidence and concluded kava kava in food would "continue to pose a risk to health," the release says. FSA banned kava kava in foods starting in 2003 after COT concluded it caused liver damage. COT said it would review the ban if "significant new data supporting the safe use of kava kava came to light." COT started reviewing the ban in early 2005 ("1The Tan Sheet" Feb. 7, 2005, p. 5)...
