Executive Summary
Procter & Gamble to consider purchase of Bristol-Myers Squibb's Clairol, the company says in Nov. 20 SEC filing. Pharmaceutical or OTC business swap will not be a part of future discussions, P&G adds. As marketer of Pantene, Vidal Sassoon, Head & Shoulders, Physique and Pert, P&G holds a 32% dollar share in the shampoo market and 49% share in hair styling, according to Information Resources, Inc. (Chicago) for the 52 weeks ended July 16. Clairol purchase likely would require P&G hair care divestiture to pass anti-trust enforcement. The company does not currently market a leading hair color brand. Henkel announced its interest in Clairol during an analyst meeting Nov. 13 (1"The Rose Sheet" Nov. 20, p. 7)
